Dear guests of this website,
A life's dream and target of many decades has become a reality.
25 years ago the then president Chris Messis publicised for the first time the decision of the Limassol Medical Association's committee for the creation of a Medical Museum. Doctors from Nicosia, Christakis Ieronymides, Mikis and Olvia Constantinidou and the family of Petros Matsas donated the first exhibits. Many families of late colleagues from Limassol (Gaston Schizas, Solon and Lina Solomonidou, Yiannakis Hadjipapas and Marios Tritoftides) followed. The donations were completed by many active colleagues. There was a lack of storage places. In recent years the basement of Dr. Kyriacos Andreou clinic played that role but finding a suitable place to shelter the museum proved impossible.
Finally this was achieved in 2011 following the renovation and offering of a beautiful and traditional building by Polemidia municipality. We would like to thank the Mayor Mr. George Georgiou and his council for this decision.
The Cyprus Medical Museum, was founded by Limassol Medical Association in 11.09.2001 and it was officially registered in 2003 during the presidency of Dr Nicolas Christodoulou, with Marios Philippou, Giannis Ioannou, Andreas Kodjamanis, Frederickos Tsolakis, Savvas Frangos and Melios Yiannakkas being its committee members. It's a unique museum in its kind in the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East region.
It is functioning under conditions and terms that are included in its constitution. The purpose of the museum is the collection of old medical instruments, equipments and other objects as well as medical books.
The first financial support of the museum came from the sales of the book of the honorary president Chris Messis titled "Limassol Medical Association. 30 years of existence and action" while he never stopped campaigning for its creation and the finding, transportation and description of the exhibits.
Any financial support and donations are welcome from the state, church, organisations, municipalities and other individuals.
Doctors all over Cyprus are the principle financial supporters of the museum.
It houses 200 exhibits donated by 35 doctors and other organisations from all over Cyprus. It also includes a small library and a botanical garden with medicinal plants. The exhibits come to life with lighted platforms and life-sized models portraying delivery, operating and examining rooms. Of special interest are equipments used for the first time in Cyprus such as an Electrocardiograph, hemodialysis machine e.t.c. The excellent design, placement, lighting and promotion of the exhibits was performed by the architect / set designer George Papadopoulos of Skinotechniki.
With the aid of 8 touch screen computers placed next to the specialty units the visitors can get all the information regarding donators as well as the location, the period and type of use of the various exhibits.
Short videos present the modern practise of medicine and surgeries as well as the progress of medical technology within the last century.
The visitor of this website can view videos of all Medical conferences and Carnival balls of Limassol Medical Association. Also our website contains photographs of the reconstruction and renovation of the building as well as the various other events that took place to the museum.
The inauguration of the museum took place on 14/09/2012 by the President of the Republic, and the former minister of health Dr. Stavros Malas.
I want to thank the officer of the museum Stavros Heracleous for the design of this website as well as the electronic infrastructure of the touch screens.
I hope that this website will prove friendly and helpful for all the visitors.
